Harambee Starlets target statement win over hosts Morocco in WAFCON opener

Kenya, who arrived in Rabat on 23 July after a one-week camp in France, have been putting the finishing touches to their preparations at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, the team's official training base.

Speaking ahead of the Group A opener, which kicks off at 11pm East Africa Time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Odemba said the squad's preparation has left them well equipped to make a strong start.

"These young players bring valuable experience to our team. Some have already played at a World Cup and understand the demands of competing at the highest level.

"To grow, you have to face the best. Playing the host nation in our opening match is a challenge we welcome. We want to start the tournament on a positive note, and we are ready," added Odemba.

Morocco head coach Jorge Vilda, who guided Spain to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup title, believes the Atlas Lionesses will draw strength from home support rather than feel burdened by expectation.

"Playing at home, in front of our fans and families, is an advantage. We do not feel pressure. Instead, we are excited and motivated to showcase our football," said the Spaniard.

Morocco captain Ghislaine Chebbak also appeared calm and focused ahead of the opening fixture.

The reigning CAF Women's Player of the Year insisted team success remains her priority despite her individual accolades.

"My goal is to give my best for the team. Individual awards are appreciated, but what matters most is winning trophies together."

Kenya booked their place at the 2026 finals with an impressive 4-1 aggregate victory over The Gambia in the final qualifying round.

The Starlets began their qualification campaign by edging Tunisia 1-0 on aggregate before producing a commanding display against The Gambia. In the first leg at Nairobi's Nyayo National Stadium, Kenya recovered from an early setback to claim a crucial 3-1 victory.

They sealed qualification with a disciplined 1-0 win in the return leg, played in Senegal, where captain Mwanalima Adam Jereko scored the decisive goal to complete a 4-1 aggregate triumph and secure Kenya's return to the continental showpiece.
