The 2026 GRC Full Gas Criterium cycle racing rolled off on Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre, launching a new season of high-tempo circuit racing with an impressive turnout of riders and fans.

The opening round brought together more than 15 teams in a competition that blended elite racing with grassroots participation. Organised by the Gravel Riders Club, the event continues to carve out a reputation as a key platform for developing cycling talent in Kenya.

GRC chairman Victor Dawa reaffirmed the series' developmental focus, noting that regular competition is critical in nurturing riders across different levels.

"The GRC Full Gas Criterium is about building the future of Kenyan cycling from the grassroots. By hosting regular races, we are creating opportunities for young riders, elite athletes and para cyclists to compete, grow and inspire the next generation of cyclists," he said.

Action on the circuit lived up to expectations, with Bradley Gabriel powering to victory in the Elite Men race ahead of Geoffrey Waire and Peter Githinji. In the Elite Women category, Monica Jelimo produced a strong performance to secure top spot, finishing ahead of Ruth Nganga.

In the junior ranks, Carl Karanja claimed honours in the Under-19 Men race, underlining the depth of emerging talent. Paula Karanja and Travis Israel also impressed in the Under 13 girls' and boys' races respectively, highlighting the event's role in giving young riders a competitive stage.

The series will run as a monthly competition at Kasarani, with organisers targeting nine rounds this year following a successful 2025 campaign that earned recognition within the local cycling calendar. Its inclusive structure, featuring categories for different age groups as well as para cycling, continues to widen participation in the sport.

Supported by the Kenya Cycling Federation, the initiative is also seeking increased corporate backing to sustain its growth. The next race is scheduled for April 26 at the same venue.
