Amb. Dr. Yusuf Noah, popularly known as Refigah Heviweit, was among the recipients of the National Heroes Medal during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Eldoret on Tuesday.
Noah was conferred the state honour by President William Ruto
and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in recognition of his contribution to
arts, culture and leadership.
The award, administered under the National Heroes Council,
recognises Kenyans who have rendered exceptional and distinguished service to
the country.
Noah has played a prominent role in Kenya’s music industry
through Grandpa Records, a label credited with promoting local music at a time
when foreign sounds dominated the airwaves.
Through the label, he helped nurture Kenyan artists and
promote local sounds, contributing to the growth and visibility of the
country's music industry.
He has also been involved in promoting Nubian culture
internationally through the Sabala Festival and other cultural diplomacy
initiatives aimed at showcasing Kenya's cultural heritage to global audiences.
Beyond the entertainment industry, Noah has engaged in
philanthropic initiatives, including ‘Simama na Kibra,’ which supported
vulnerable families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking after receiving the medal, Noah thanked the National
Heroes Council and the agencies involved in the vetting process for the
recognition.
He also expressed gratitude to President Ruto and Prime
Minister Abiy Ahmed, saying the honour reflected the importance of arts and
culture in nation-building.
