Gov't vehicles to be fitted with tracking system to curb misuse

The reforms follow a meeting chaired by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, bringing together representatives from the Executive, Parliament, Judiciary and security agencies to review the operational protocols governing government vehicles.

Part of the new reforms, according to Koskei, is the launch of the Government Vehicle Management System (GVMS), a centralised digital platform that provides real-time oversight of every vehicle. The system will provide details such as the car's authorised driver, fuel consumption, mileage and maintenance history. 

To enhance accountability, data from all Ministries, Departments, Agencies and counties will be verified to create a uniform record. 

He noted that the system's launch is part of the government's commitment to respond to changing transport needs, advances in technology and growing accountability requirements. 

"The process brings together institutions across Government to build shared ownership, ensure alignment and support seamless implementation."

Koskei called upon public officers to exercise responsibility, uphold discipline and ensure that the vehicles serve the public interest. 

Alongside the Management System, Koskei reaffirmed that the government will finalise the National Transport Policy and coordinate with the National Treasury to ensure all project vehicles are registered. 

Present during the meeting were Deputy Head of the Public Service Amos Gathecha; Principal Secretaries Dr Patrick Mariru, (Defence) Cyrell Odede, (Public Investments and Assets Management) and Mohamed Dhagar, (Transport),Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Joseph Busiega.
