The national government has rolled out an ambitious multi-million shilling development agenda in Ugunja Constituency, Siaya County, in what it describes as a transformative effort to uplift the region's economy, education standards, and overall living conditions.
Under the stewardship of President William Ruto, and executed
by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the projects span
key sectors including trade, housing, and education infrastructure.
At the heart of the economic revitalization strategy is the
construction of modern marketplaces aimed at supporting local traders.
Two of these, Kayombi and Sidindi markets, are currently in
the procurement phase under the Economic Stimulus Programme.
Each market, with a budget of Ksh.70 million, is set to
accommodate about 300 traders, providing enhanced trading spaces that come with
better infrastructure and sanitation.
Even more ambitious is the upcoming Ugunja Municipality
Market, which will serve over 1,500 traders once completed. With a Ksh.350
million price tag, the state-of-the-art facility will feature modern amenities
including toilets, parking areas, and storage bays.
Looking ahead to the next financial year, the government has
plans to roll out similar markets in Sikalame, Sigomere, and Ligega. Of these,
Sigomere Market is expected to house 500 traders, while Sikalame and Ligega
will each cater to 300.
The government is also investing heavily in housing under its
Affordable Housing Programme. In Phase One of the project, 400 housing units
will be constructed in Uref, aiming to provide affordable and quality homes for
local residents.
This, the government says, is part of its broader strategy to
uplift living standards across the constituency.
The education sector is also receiving a major boost. Three
large-scale accommodation projects are currently in the pipeline, targeting
institutions of higher learning within the constituency.
These include: A 340-bed KMTC Ugunja; Ugunja Technical and
Vocational College (TVC); and the Ugunja National Youth Service (NYS) Campus,
where the government will put up a 580-bed student housing facility at the
institution.
