Gov't steps up preparations ahead of El Niño rains

The two organisations said they would strengthen coordination and information sharing as the country prepares for increased rainfall, flooding and other weather-related emergencies expected during the season.

The partnership, brought together by Bunge la Wananchi National Prime Minister Davince Akula, will focus on ensuring information on emerging risks reaches communities in time while enabling authorities to respond more quickly to urgent needs.

Akula said preparedness must begin at the community level, urging Kenyans to act before disasters strike rather than wait for emergencies to unfold.

“Disaster preparedness begins at the community level. By working together, we can ensure that communities are not only informed about potential risks but are also equipped to take early action. We don’t want another case of life loss during the coming rains," he said.

The organisations also encouraged residents to keep drainage systems and waterways clear, avoid flood-prone areas and identify safe routes and shelters before the rains intensify.

Residents were further advised to safeguard important documents and household property while closely following official weather forecasts and emergency alerts.

NDOC representative John Murigi said disaster management requires coordination between government agencies, communities and other stakeholders.

“Effective disaster management requires collaboration across government, communities and other stakeholders. Our partnership with Bunge la Wananchi will help strengthen community-level preparedness, information flow and early action ahead of the OND rains," Murigi added.

The collaboration comes as communities across the country prepare for varying levels of exposure to flooding and other effects associated with heavy rainfall.

Members of the public were urged to report emerging hazards and support households considered more vulnerable during emergencies, including those with children, older persons and people living with disabilities.
