Gov’t picks 10 irrigation schemes to unlock production, markets

The government has identified 10 irrigation schemes for a pilot programme aimed at increasing agricultural production and opening up new markets for farmers.

The schemes cover about 14,819 acres and have a combined 52,115 farmers, with crops ranging from rice, maize and horticultural produce to vegetables, pulses, potatoes, onions and avocado.

The meeting aimed at exploring measures to improve production and strengthen market opportunities within the schemes, and brought together government agencies and other stakeholders to examine ways of improving access to farm inputs, extension services, financing, technology and markets.

The government also wants farmers to strengthen aggregation through cooperatives while establishing direct links with processors, exporters and other buyers.

Kimotho says his Ministry will work with county governments, development partners, financial institutions, private-sector players and farmer organisations to improve the entire agricultural value chain.

The focus will include production, aggregation, storage, processing, financing and access to markets.

PS Kimotho further pointed out that the approach is intended to turn irrigation schemes into commercially viable agricultural hubs, with reliable water supply matched with financing, technology, organised farmers, value addition and assured markets.

The initiative is expected to increase productivity and household incomes while creating employment and supporting food security.
