The government is set to electrify 10,968 households in Samburu County as part of efforts to empower residents and expand opportunities for income-generating activities in the region.
Speaking in Baragoi and Maralal towns during the launch of Last Mile Electrification projects by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira said the initiative is part of President William Ruto’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of rural communities through increased access to electricity.
The PS, who was accompanied by Naisula Lesuuda and Eli Letipila, said the projects are expected to be completed by September this year, marking a major milestone in efforts to connect parts of Samburu that have remained without electricity for decades.
During the launch, Wachira flagged off materials for the electrification of 700 homes in Shabaa and Ngilai villages in Samburu West and Samburu North constituencies. He noted that access to electricity would significantly improve education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for residents in the area.
Lesuuda welcomed the government’s efforts to expand electricity connectivity in the county, saying the projects would greatly improve the quality of life for local communities and boost development.
Addressing concerns over frequent power outages in Maralal town, Wachira explained that the instability is linked to the current power supply line, whose substation is located in Lanet, Nakuru County.
He added that the government is in the process of commissioning a new power line from Nanyuki to Rumuruti and subsequently energizing the Rumuruti substation, which is expected to provide a more stable power supply to Maralal town.
