Governors condemn alleged assault on Samburu governor by senators

In a press statement on April 2, 2026, CoG chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi said the alleged incident was an affront to the dignity of the office of governor and a threat to constitutionalism and the rule of law.

“This demonstration of hooliganism not only demeans the dignity of the public office of the Governor as a Head of Government, but strikes at the very heart of constitutionalism and the rule of law,” the statement reads.

The governors said the Senate, as an “August House” mandated to protect the interests of county governments, has lawful mechanisms for enforcing its oversight role under the Constitution and Senate Standing Orders, and should not resort to what they described as “witch-hunting, harassment, violence and intimidation”.

The CoG called on the Speaker of the Senate to condemn the senators involved and to fast-track mechanisms for resolving concerns the governors have raised against some members of the Senate’s County Public Accounts Committee.

The governors further said the alleged assault could amount to a criminal offence and indicated they would pursue legal action.

In its statement, the CoG urged restraint and said state actors must uphold accountability, human rights and the rule of law, calling for urgent action to safeguard constitutional order and restore integrity within public institutions.
