Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has called for Coastal political unity, saying the region must stand together if it is to claim its rightful place in national leadership.

Representing ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga, the Governor, who is also ODM Deputy Party Leader, honoured Mama Dorothy’s legacy of service and resilience, then used the moment to underscore that the Coast can no longer afford division at a time when the region is seeking greater influence in Kenya’s power structure.

“As coastal counties, we are in the broadband government, and we should unite and lobby for development and opportunities for our people, regardless of the political parties," he said during the funeral service of the late Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri

His message comes against the backdrop of growing momentum around Hassan Joho’s bid for the deputy presidency, with Coastal leaders increasingly framing unity as the key to converting regional strength into national bargaining power.

National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula and his Senate counterpart Amason Kingi, on their part, called on Kenyans to embrace peace and desist from leaders out to divide them on a tribal basis.

The leaders, while speaking at the burial of Kilifi North MP Owen Baya’s mother Dorothy Baya Mweri, also challenged elected leaders from the Coast region to outline Kenya Kwanza’s development achievements as a way of endearing into the Kenyan voters.

Kingi said that local politicians were supporting President William Ruto but were not keen on telling residents the development projects being undertaken by his government in the area.

“I want to congratulate my fellow coastal leaders from Tana River to Taita Taveta because we are all supporting the president, and we know we will stand by him in the coming election,” said Kingi.
