Government warns politicians against using criminal gangs to intimidate rivals

Speaking during an interdenominational prayer service and fundraiser for 331 church choirs in Nyamira County, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said violence and criminality should not define Kenya's political landscape.

Omollo urged young people to reject attempts by politicians to use them to advance personal political interests, emphasizing that political differences should be resolved through the ballot rather than violence.

"If you do not support a particular leader, wait for the elections and exercise your democratic right. Violence, intimidation and criminal gangs have no place in our politics," he said.

The PS commended Nyamira residents for maintaining peace and resisting organised criminal groups, saying the county should serve as an example of peaceful political engagement where leaders and citizens can express differing views without fear or intimidation.

He directed the County Commissioner, National Government Administrative Officers and security agencies to work with local leaders and residents to safeguard peace, prevent political violence and ensure public meetings are conducted without disruption.

Omollo also announced that the government had operationalised additional administrative units in Nyamira County to improve access to public services. He encouraged qualified candidates to apply for the advertised Chief and Assistant Chief positions, saying effective grassroots administration remains critical to security, service delivery and community development.

He further called on Kenyans to reject leaders promoting ethnic and religious divisions, stating that the government was investing in roads, education, healthcare and employment opportunities across the country to foster national unity and inclusive development.

The event was attended by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, President's Adviser Farouk Kibet, legislators, religious leaders, elders and residents from Nyamira, Kisii and neighbouring counties.
