Government reduces University fees

In a memo issued by Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the state says the decision followed extensive consultations with students, the public and other stakeholders in the education sector. 

“In direct response to concerns raised by students and their families, the Government has lowered fees payable by students across all academic programmes,” reads a memo written to Vice Chancellors of public universities and Principals of constituent colleges. 

The PS said the rationalization is meant to ensure “affordable, accessible and quality university education.” Inyangala further stated that the reduction in fees would help in maintaining financial sustainability of the higher learning institutions. 

The universities are expected to adopt the new fee schedules from September 1, 2025. This will be applicable to both first years and continuing students. 

“All public universities are further directed to update their admissions and finance portals to reflect the revised fees of academic programmes,” the Education PS directed. 

In addition, students will continue to meet cost of programmes through a combination of tuition fees, scholarships and loans based on the needs of individual students.
