Gor Mahia stage second-half comeback to clinch Green Legacy Cup on penalties

Gor Mahia missed an early chance to take the lead when Victor Kamongo saved Musa Shariff's 15th-minute penalty. Migori Youth made them pay, stunning the record champions with two goals in six minutes: Dennis Oguta opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Philemon Nyakwakwa doubled the lead in the 36th.

Paul Okoth pulled one back for Gor Mahia in first-half stoppage time, and substitute Ebenezer Assifuah levelled the score four minutes after the restart. Neither side found a winner in normal time; Kaloti came closest for Gor Mahia, forcing a save in the 89th minute, and the match went to penalties, where Gor Mahia held their nerve to win 4-3 and lift the trophy.

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor praised his side's character after the comeback.

"The fact that we were behind and came back to equalise shows a bit of character from our players," he said.

He admitted Migori had surprised his team but said the match exposed areas still needing work before the season begins.

"When we come across a deep opponent, we have to know to be smart. We need to improve in our final-third issues," Akonnor said.

For Migori Youth, the result was a valuable confidence-building exercise ahead of their first FKF Premier League campaign following promotion from the National Super League. Head coach Salim Babu said the squad is still taking shape, with building his young players' confidence a key priority.

"This is a team we are still building. The main thing we are trying to do is build their confidence because the talent is there," he said.

Migori Youth have been in pre-season training for nearly four weeks and expect to complete about six weeks of preparation before the league kicks off. Babu added that the club's main objective this season will be to secure enough points to avoid a relegation fight.

"We want to avoid fighting relegation in the final minutes of the season," he said.
