Gor Mahia resist interest in key players ahead of demanding season

Gor Mahia have ruled out interest for some of their several key players from foreign clubs following the club's impressive run to the CECAFA Kagame Cup final.

Gor Mahia Secretary General Nicanor Arum says the club is reluctant to release players still under contract as the Kenyan champions prepare for a demanding season that includes the CAF Champions League and the defence of their domestic title.

“The interest in our players has grown and foreign clubs are trying to persuade us to reach deals with them. Our stand is that we also need a formidable team ahead of our international assignments in addition to defending our league title,” said Arum.

Winger Sharrif Musa, who scored Gor's equalizer in the CECAFA Kagame Cup final against Rayon Sports, is reportedly attracting interest from Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh, alongside defender Paul Ochuoga.

Arum, however, says the interest extends beyond the two players, with the club yet to receive an offer strong enough to consider releasing any of its stars.

“It is not only Musa and Ochuoga. The list is growing daily, but no team has convinced us yet, and we cannot rush to make any mistake ahead of a demanding season,” added Arum.

The club is also dealing with a number of injury setbacks suffered during the regional tournament in Rwanda.

Captain Sylvester Owino and Cameroonian forward Patrick Essombe are expected to be out for around three months, while forward Samuel Kapen faces a much longer spell on the sidelines after suffering a complete anterior cruciate ligament tear.

“Kapen’s injury is extreme and doctors have advised that he stay out of action for close to 18 months. As for Essombe and captain Owino, they are most likely to resume training in three months,” said Arum.

Despite the injuries, Arum says Gor made adequate reinforcements during the transfer window and will not be left exposed.

Arum, who doubles up as a High School Principal, identified Frank Odhiambo and vice-captain Michael Kibwage as capable replacements for Owino in central defence.

Gor Mahia will begin preparations for the new season on Sunday when they face newly promoted Migori Youth FC in the Legacy Cup at Nyayo National Stadium.

The Kenyan champions will then turn their attention to continental football, with Egyptian giants Pyramids FC visiting Nairobi for the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League on September 6.
