Gachagua accuses Kindiki of targeting MP Mukunji after Embu clashes

Writing on his X account on Sunday, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader alleged that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki had threatened Mukunji in a WhatsApp message following the clashes.

He further accused Kindiki and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire of attempting to link Mukunji to the violence by claiming he had sent goons to disrupt the meeting.

The claims come a day after violence broke out at Nembure Stadium during a UDA meeting attended by Kindiki and Mbarire. Police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of local youth after clashes erupted, with reports of deaths and several injuries.

Gachagua alleged the violence was triggered after thousands of residents were locked out of the stadium, where he claimed campaign money was to be distributed. He further claimed, without providing evidence, that Kindiki had been allocated funds to bribe residents in Embu and the wider Mt Kenya East region.

The former deputy president said he had mobilised lawyers to defend Mukunji should he be arrested.

"I want to assure DCP supporters that I have mobilised our lawyers to defend Hon. Mukunji once arrested in church where he will attend," Gachagua said.

He added that any arrest and prosecution of Mukunji would only strengthen his political support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mukunji has previously denied involvement in the Nembure clashes, while Mbarire has accused him of being connected to the individuals who caused the chaos.
