From Nairobi to Mombasa on boda-boda

The rider, Job Njoroge, took up the challenge, probably becoming the first known Kenyan to transport a customer from Nairobi to Mombasa on two wheels.

According to Rayan, Njoroge took up the challenge without any hesitation.

The journey involved passing through the dreaded 56-kilometres Man-Eaters stretch in the heart of Tsavo National Park. It's a dangerous stretch.

Njoroge spoke to Citizen Digital about the events of that day, vividly describing every bit of the encounter.

“I was at work as usual, waiting to get an order from a travelling client, only to receive a customer request asking to travel to Mombasa. I thought it was a joker at first, but then the client confirmed that he indeed wanted to get to Mombasa,” said Njoroge who had never ferried a customer beyond Kitengela.

Rayan and Njoroge took on the challenge, together boarding the boda-boda all the way to the Coast in a thrilling adventure.

“The client agreed to pay me Ksh 20,000 just to take him to Mombasa on my boda,” says Njoroge.

Njoroge did not need much convincing since he had the right dressing to cushion him from the biting cold and wind. All he needed was money to fuel the bike.

“I spent Ksh 6,500 on fuel to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa,” says Njoroge who would later embark on a solo return journey to Nairobi.

Rayan described the experience as daring, beautiful and historic.

“I held the edge of the bike for long hours. My wrist was hurting all the way. I held my bag with one hand. No one believed we could make it to Mombasa alive,” says Rayan.

Rayan shares what it was like to experience the journey from the seat of a boda boda, the fear of encountering wild animals, and a temporary visit to an abandoned petrol station at Man Eaters, that made his hair to stand.
