Former Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Ibrahim Ali has been appointed as the new female non-Member Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).
Ali was sworn in on Thursday by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, succeeding Rachel Ameso, whose term expired.
She was approved by the National Assembly on Wednesday after the Senate approved her appointment on October 1.
Speaking after taking the oath, Fatuma vowed to honour the appointment and work with fellow commissioners to safeguard the mandate of the PSC.
“I am a person who believes in consensus in commissions. Consensus is very crucial in decision-making, and I am committed to working on consensus at all times,” she said.
Speaker Wetang'ula said the new commissioner was joining the PSC at a time when the Commission was seeking to strengthen Parliament, uphold integrity and improve public understanding of its work.
He urged her to use her experience to strengthen the Commission and help Parliament deliver its mandate of representation, legislation and oversight.
“You have been in this Parliament with us. You have a rich history behind you, and I have no doubt whatsoever that you will add value to this Commission,” he said.
PSC Commissioner Johnson Muthama also welcomed Fatuma, saying her record in public service had prepared her for the demanding responsibilities of the Commission.
She was appointed under provisions in Article 127(2)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya, which provides for one man and one woman appointed by Parliament from persons experienced in public affairs who are not serving Members of Parliament.
The PSC is established under Article 127 of the Constitution to, among other things, provide services and facilities to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of Parliament.
