Former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has
announced plans to step down from his current position as Tourism Chief
Administrative Secretary (CAS), with immediate effect, to pursue a career in
politics.
Boinnet, who was speaking to reporters at Parliament
buildings on Thursday, added that he would be contesting for Elgeyo Marakwet
County’s gubernatorial seat at the August General Elections.
“Today’s appearance in Parliament marks the end of my duty
as a CAS because immediately after this I am going to tender my resignation
because I intend to vie for Elgeyo Marakwet’s gubernatorial seat,” Boinnet
said.
Boinnet similarly thanked both President Uhuru Kenyatta and
Deputy President William Ruto for trusting in him during his tenures as IG of
Police and Tourism CAS, citing that he did not take their trust in him and the
opportunities for granted.
“I am very grateful for the opportunities but now I feel
prepared to serve the people of Elgeyo Marakwet County,” he added.
Boinnet’s announcement follows a circular, dated January 28
and penned by Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua that reminded public
officers eyeing elective seats to resign and handover their offices by next
Tuesday.
The
Elections Act stipulates that aspirants seeking to elective positions should
vacate their offices at least six months before the General Elections.
The CAS began his law enforcement career in 1984 before
rising through the ranks to become a senior superintendent. He would later
transfer to the National Intelligence Service (NIS) where he was nominated to
replace former IG David Kimaiyo, in December 2014, following his resignation.
Boinnet was sworn in as IG of Police in March 2015. After
his four-year term expired in 2019 he was succeeded by Hilary Mutyambai. He was
appointed Tourism CS in the same year and he has held the position since.
