The family of former Matungu Member of Parliament (MP) David Were is in mourning after their 39-year-old son was killed in Kisumu by unknown robbers.

Hannington Were was reportedly attacked at around 1 a.m on Sunday by two people on a motorbike who robbed him and killed him.

Were had reportedly left his house at around midnight with a friend, Peter Mutua, when they were relayed by two people on a motorbike.

"They came with the motorbike they just turned and whisked out something that looked like a piece of metal which they used to hit him. I ran calling for help," Mutua said.

The former MP said that his son, who was rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), succumbed to stab wounds.

"He was rushed to hospital around 2:30 and I was told he had stab wounds in his back," David Were said.

The body has been moved to the hospital's morgue as investigations commence.

Area residents have decried what they say is a wave of crime within the city that has gone up in recent months.
