Arorwet Location Chief Rose Bii said the victim, Tracy Chepng’etich, 17, was allegedly waylaid by her schoolmate, Mercy Chepkemoi, also 17, before being slashed on the neck with a panga.
According to the chief, the incident occurred along a road near the victim’s home, where the suspect is said to have been waiting for her before launching the attack.
Chepng’etich sustained deep neck injuries and was rushed to Tenwek Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Chief Bii said the two girls are students at Arorwet Comprehensive School.
Preliminary accounts suggest the attack may have stemmed from a dispute involving a boy who was allegedly romantically involved with both students.
A close friend of the girls, who declined to be recorded, claimed the suspect became aware of the alleged relationship between the boy and the victim, prompting the confrontation.
Police have since arrested Chepkemoi in connection with the incident. She is being held at Kiptagich Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine the appropriate charges.
