Five suspects held over murder of former Cheptais councillor Nathan Wasama

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is holding five suspects believed to be linked to a criminal gang accused of killing former Cheptais councillor Nathan Masai Wasama on August 8.

According to Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi, two of the suspects, Robert Kimtai alias Miti and Brian Chongin Kaos, presented themselves at Chwele and Cheptais police stations on Thursday as detectives continued to pursue leads into the killing.

The other three suspects were arrested at the home of area Member of Parliament Fred Kapondi following a police raid.

Police say they recovered crude weapons and a hand grenade during the operation, although no firearm was found at the MP's residence.

"Concerning the murder of former Councillor Cheptais, Wasama Nathan Masai, we confiscated three motorbikes... we went to Hon. Kapondi's home, but we didn't find any firearm; we found crude weapons and one hand grenade,” Njagi said.

The five suspects remain in custody as detectives pursue further leads into the circumstances surrounding Wasama's killing.
