Three people, including a father and his son, have died after drowning inside a septic tank at Makindu Boys High School in Makindu, Makueni County.

The victims had been contracted to drain sewage from the school’s septic system when the tragic incident occurred. Preliminary reports indicate that the workers lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen inside the confined space, before drowning in the tank.

Emergency response teams from the Makueni County disaster management unit, working in coordination with officials from the Kenya Red Cross, were deployed to the scene to conduct a recovery operation.

All three bodies were later retrieved from the septic tank.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident as concerns grow over safety standards and compliance in confined-space work environments.
