Farmers in Igembe North seek compensation for elephant damage

Farmers in Igembe North Constituency in Meru County, whose crops were destroyed by elephants, are calling on the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to fast-track compensation.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the farmers said that the relief food, recently distributed by the government, is insufficient compared to the harvest they lost.

Each affected household received a bag of maize, a bag of beans and eight kilograms of porridge flour.

However, the farmers say the supplies will only last a few days and do little to address the food insecurity caused by the destruction of their crops.

They are now urging their leaders to ensure KWS compensation is paid promptly to enable them to rebuild their livelihoods.

Igembe North Deputy County Commissioner Martin Mwiha, however, said the relief food is only meant to provide short-term support as farmers prepare to return to their farms and resume production.
