A family in Kabarak village, Oldonyo-Orok area of Ang'ata Barirkoi Ward, Trans Mara South, is seeking justice after their relative died following an attack on Saturday night.

Leonard Kirui, a middle aged man, sustained severe injuries during the incident and died while being rushed to hospital. His family says Kirui was abducted from outside his home by unknown individuals before he was attacked with blunt objects.

His brother, Hillary Kirui, said the family was having dinner at about 9:30pm when they heard screams coming from nearby.

“When we arrived at the scene, we found out it was our brother. We couldn't figure out who killed him or who he had argued with,” he explained.

Hillary said the family wants those responsible arrested so they can establish what led to Kirui's death.

“We are asking the government to track down the culprits and arrest them so we can know the truth, where the truth lies and why he was killed.”

However, police have given a different account of the events leading to Kirui's death.

Trans Mara South Police Commander Enrico Lyomo Telewa said the incident occurred at Ona in Eldonyiro Sub-location after a dispute broke out among a group of young men who had been drinking.

According to Telewa, four men attacked two youths, injuring both of them.

“One of them was injured, while the other was severely hurt. He suffered several panga cuts on his arms, but the fatal blow was from a blunt metal object, commonly known as a ‘kombo’, that struck him on the head,” he said.

Telewa said Kirui was left at the scene before Good Samaritans found him and alerted police as they rushed him to hospital.

“Unfortunately, we were later informed that the victim passed away just as he was about to be admitted to the Sub-District Hospital,” he explained.

Police have since arrested one suspect in connection with the incident, with other individuals named as persons of interest.

Telewa said efforts were underway to trace the remaining suspects, with investigations continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Kirui's body has since been moved to Kilgoris Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

His wife, Mercy Kirui, is calling on the government to establish what led to her husband's death and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

The family is now awaiting the outcome of the police investigations and post-mortem examination as they seek answers over Kirui's death.
