A police raid has discovered people using fake whiskey labels to produce counterfeit alcohol in Kariobangi, Nairobi.

They found labels of popular whiskey brands such as Kenya Cane, Richot and Viceroy.

Fake bottles packed in boxes and chemicals used to make the illicit alcohol were also recovered from the premises.

The suspects were using counterfeit Kenya Bureau of Standards tax stamps to get their products on the shelves.

Alcoholic drinks in sachets have also found their way back to the Kenyan market despite being banned over a decade ago.

The Government is said to be losing millions in revenue as the fake alcohol poses a huge health risk since its safety cannot be guaranteed.

Genuine industry players have in the past urged the State to take stern action on those found culpable of illegal manufacturing of alcohol.
