Authorities in Bomet National Livestock Board have apprehended a man from Sigor in Chepalungu Constituency who has been duping local farmers by posing as a professional veterinarian.

A sting operation led by officials disguised as desperate livestock owners seeking urgent care managed to catch Kipkerich Rugut in the act.

The undercover operation revealed his involvement in selling counterfeit veterinary drugs after he was unable to explain himself, leading to his detention at Chepalungu Police Station, where he faces charges.

"Nlikosa daktari nikaona niponeshe ng'ombe… mimi nafuga ng'ombe na nalima shamba," said Rugut.

The arrest light on the troubling trend in Bomet County, where fake veterinarians are exploiting the community's reliance on animal husbandry.

With livestock being vital to the local economy, such deceitful practices not only endanger animals but also jeopardize public health by potentially contaminating dairy and meat products.

"Unfortunately, these are the drugs that are being used by the quacks to cause harm not only to animal welfare but also to derogate the practice of veterinary medicine in the Republic of Kenya," said Kenya Veterinary Board Manager Compliance and Enforcement Dr Benson Kibore.

"The board, through our CEO, already issued a statement that anybody selling prescription-only drugs and does not have the authority of the board will be deregistered."

As the crackdown on unlicensed practitioners intensifies, Rugut’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking within the agricultural sector. With his trial approaching, the community awaits a verdict that could set a precedent in the ongoing battle against such harmful practices.
