His closest rival, Uhuru Kenyatta, and his deputy designate William Ruto, were then facing charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague over the 2007 post-election violence.
This, perhaps, made Raila supporters believe their favourite candidate stood a better chance to clinch the country's top seat.
One such supporter with high spirits going into the General Election was Nicolas Owino Magina, a resident of Kondele in Kisumu, who grew up admiring Raila and his style of politics.
But against his expectations, Isaack Hassan, the then IEBC chairman, declared Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the presidential election.
What followed were street protests in Kondele where Magina cried uncontrollably in the full glare of cameras.
"In that video, I wanted to show the country that there is no fairness in our electoral system. That is why I was crying uncontrollably," Magina told Citizen Digital.
He claimed that the paper he held and said had evidence was what he had been tallying himself as the election results trickled in, something that made him believe Raila had won the election but rigged out.
"I was tallying every county. Raila had won in the coast, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western. That was my evidence that Raila won the election," Magina added.
Having been brought up in Siaya by his aunt following the death of his mother, Magina did not get the chance to go school. However, he grew up doing menial jobs and ended up in Kondele where he met other Raila supporters.
Magina says the death of Raila was a big blow to him and all the people who loved him. He says he has never visited Raila's graveyard in Bondo at Kang'o ka Jaramogi.
"I look forward to going there one day when I'm ready. I can't believe Raila is dead," he adds.
On the current political state in the country, Magina says he fully supports President William Ruto because that is where Raila left his supporters when he passed away.
He urges the warring ODM factions to come together for the good of the party and its supporters.
