In a post on Instagram, Eric asked all established and aspiring local musicians to meet him outside the National Assembly in large numbers on Tuesday at 6am.
“Ready to make history! 5 days to go! We are storming the parliament on Tuesday at 10am. If you are a Kenyan musician or an aspiring musician let’s meet in large numbers. Next Tuesday. We must fix it!”
Omondi said they would not be asking for much. All they want is:
The comedian said artists will be agitating for better pay at events and will demand that they get the same purse for curtain raising for foreign acts. They also want the Kenyan media compelled to play 75 percent Kenyan content
“All local media to play 75 percent of local music just like it is in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe and the list goes on and on."
“That established local musicians are accorded equal pay and treatment as their international counterparts by promoters and event organizers.”
This announcement has come after a heated conversation that Eric sparked on social media, claiming that the entertainment industry in Kenya is kicking its last.
The Ugandan music industry had a similar campaign called ‘Save Ugandan Music’ that started as a result of their media houses and deejays playing a lot of foreign music.
During an interview with a Uganda’s TV Eric said radio stations, deejays and even bloggers will be compelled to play 75 percent local music.
“If the law is passed, radio stations, deejays and even bloggers will be compelled by implemented structures and systems to do play and write 75 percent of local music.”
“The entire eco system needs to blend; Artistes need to come together, the government needs to pass the law, promoters and event organizers need to ensure that they pay established Kenyan artists the same amount they pay foreign artistes.”
