Elderly woman hospitalized after rape ordeal

A 75-year-old woman is recovering at Rongo District Hospital after she was reportedly raped on Tuesday morning at Kabworo in Rongo, Migori County.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the woman said that she had gone to fetch water at River Mesadhi when the rapist pounced on her from the nearby sugarcane plantation.

“I battled with the rapist for more than 30 minutes, he eventually overpowered me and dragged me to the nearby sugarcane plantation where he raped me severally and then he escaped,” she said.

The victim has expressed fears that many women in the region risk sexual assault when they go to fetch the precious commodity since the river is the only source of water in the region.

Speaking on the matter, Rongo OCPD Kisaka Muganda said he has not received a report on the rape incident.

However, Mr Muganda said he was following up on the matter to know why the victim’s family had not reported the rape incident to the police.
