Education stakeholders call for an increase in capitation fee for learners

A number of school principals in Migori claim that running schools has become very expensive and hard because of inadequate finances.

Kenya Secondary School Heads Association deputy chairperson for Suna West sub-county Mr. Joseph Ojiala said schools owe suppliers a lot of money for the goods and services supplied and rendered respectively.

Ojiala on Tuesday said the current capitation of Ksh.22, 000 per child needs to be increased since the high cost of living is affecting schools.

His remarks were echoed by Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara who appealed to the government through the Ministry of Education to increase the capitation at both primary and secondary school.

Masara, who was speaking during the issuance of bursaries amounting to Ksh.30M to 4000 learners in Suna West said they are also discussing the issue of capitation at the nationals assembly budget committed level.

Early this month, the National Treasury released capitation fees for schools, where primary schools were allocated Ksh.4.74 B and Ksh.16.2B for secondary schools.
