The ‘Red City Warriors’ capped off a dominant, unbeaten league-format campaign by whitewashing Uganda’s Busoga College 41-0 to seal the crown.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Omweri asserted they are just getting started, warning opponents to expect an even more lethal squad next year.
“We should expect the same Cardinal next year because we have disciplined boys we can train. Our boys are coachable and take in instructions and we are looking forward to dominating both nationally and in the East African region,” Omweri said.
The Nyanza-based team did not have it easy in their run to the title as they had to see off giants like the national reigning champions Butula and Uganda’s giants Mbarara High School.
Their campaign launched in dominant fashion on Friday with back-to-back victories, breezing past Tanzania’s Elerai before shutting out Kenyan rivals Bokoli 12-0.
A gruelling Saturday double-header provided a true test of their title credentials against Butula and Mbarara, but they held firm to edge both tightly contested matches 17-14 and 17-15, respectively.
With the trophy within their reach on Monday, the champions made no mistake. They put on a masterclass to dispatch Busoga College 27-7 before overcoming another Ugandan challenger, Makerere College School, to seal the title.
Omweri was full of praise for his squad's relentless work rate throughout the tournament.
“The feeling is really awesome; you could see it from the faces of the players. We made history! Being the champions of East Africa is no mean feat,” an overjoyed Omweri said.
The tactician credited their historic triumph to the return of three key players: playmaker Charles Njoroge, centre Joshua Muturi, and winger Yobesh Angima.
The trio had missed out when Cardinal suffered a 26-0 defeat to Butula at the national level earlier this month.
“We had three serious injuries from our key players which made us lose the nationals and I remember mentioning it to you. You can now see for yourself: when they were available we were able to display our Arsenal.”
