The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police officer attached to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) at the Isinya Weighbridge in Kajiado County over allegations of demanding and receiving a Ksh.60,000 bribe.
The officer, identified as Corporal Kennedy Monyo Waweru,
was arrested on Monday, following investigations into a complaint
lodged with the commission three days earlier.
According to the EACC, Waweru allegedly demanded the money
from a motorist to influence the charge they would face after an incident at
the weighbridge.
The complainant alleged that the officer sought the bribe to
secure a charge of “failing to stop” instead of the offence of “evading a
weighbridge.”
The commission said the officer was arrested after allegedly
receiving Ksh.60,000.
He was subsequently processed at Kilimani Police Station as
investigations into the matter continue.
The EACC has urged members of the public to report suspected
cases of bribery and corruption as it pursues efforts to combat the vice.
