DPP secures extradition order for Kenyan wanted in the US over 2013 deadly car crash

The fugitive, identified as Sancho Kibutu, was arrested pursuant to an extradition request between the governments of Kenya and the US. Kibutu was subsequently presented before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on September 10, 2026, to commence extradition proceedings following his arrest in Runda a day earlier.

On Friday, he appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Teresia Nyangena at the Milimani Law Courts and, upon being informed of the extradition request, indicated his willingness to comply with the court’s orders.

"He is expected to be surrendered to the United States to face sentencing following his conviction for Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated, contrary to Section 191.5(a) of the California Penal Code, together with three special allegations,” the DPP said.

It added that, according to the extradition request, Kibutu had been on the run since October 11, 2013, after failing to comply with an order of the Superior Court of the State of California, requiring him to appear for sentencing on October 28, 2013.

According to media reports, Kibutu, then aged 32, was driving on Golden State Boulevard when he crossed the double yellow line and crashed into another vehicle, killing a 16-year-old passenger and injuring the driver and two other occupants of the vehicle.

He was later convicted of Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated but failed to appear for sentencing in October 2013. 

He remained a fugitive for 13 years before his arrest in Runda on September 9, 2026.

The ODPP said the successful extradition proceedings underscore its continued role in facilitating international cooperation in the administration of justice and ensuring that fugitives wanted to face criminal justice processes are brought before the courts.
