Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that all manufacturers of alcoholic drinks that are sold in Kenya will undergo a fresh round of vetting.

Speaking at Nyambari, in Lari Constituency Kiambu County, Kindiki said the move is informed by a spike in alcoholic drinks that are harmful to people.

"The Government has declared a renewed war against poisonous and illicit alcohol. There are people who continue to sell our young people alcohol containing chemicals that endanger their lives and health and damage their reproductive health," he said.

"Those who sell alcohol should know that we have declared war, just as we did in 2024 when we carried out vetting of manufacturers of second-generation alcoholic drinks."

He lamented that some flagged manufacturers have continued manufacturing harmful alcohol and need their licences revoked.

He said that he will hold a meeting with officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, the Ministry of Interior, and security agencies and all other relevant stakeholders to effect the crackdown.

The Deputy President also called upon Kenyans to depoliticize the fight against harmful alcoholic drinks in the country and instead leave the fight to security organs and other relevant government agencies.

"This is not a political war. Therefore, politicians should stay away. The political work of governors, MPs and other leaders is about the construction of markets, roads, electricity and other development projects. But the fight against illicit and poisonous alcohol is a matter of security and public health. Let us leave it to Government officials and members of the public who want to support this fight," he said.

He was speaking while inspecting development projects being undertaken by the national government in Lari Constituency, where he assured Kenyans that the government is on course in implementing its development agenda and urged them to ignore the naysayers.

"Those critics who spoke earlier and said that no roads would be constructed have now gone silent. They have nothing more to say. They were saying that the Lironi–Mau Summit Road would never be constructed. They even said there is no single wheelbarrow. Today, the reality on the ground speaks for itself," he said.
