The Raila Amollo Odinga Memorial National Steering Committee has sounded an alarm that this month's remembrance of the departed leader should not be used to solicit and raise funds in the name of the family or committee.

The National Committee chairperson, Prof Adams Oloo, said the committee has received information that other unscrupulous members are taking advantage of the anniversary month, warning them to desist from the vice.

“Everyone is warmly welcome to celebrate in the best way we can, and we underline this, provided that no funds are raised in the name of family or steering committee. We make this request out of an abundance of caution that no one will misuse this well-intentioned season of remembrance for personal gain,” Oloo warned.

Adams said the marking of the anniversary has officially begun, with the culmination of the celebrations set at the Migwena Cultural Sports Ground in Bondo sub-county on the 15th of this month.

“The celebration of life will begin at 8 am. We welcome all who wish to be present to arrive early and join the family in this day of thanksgiving.”

The Committee has also invited all members of the society, regardless of their diversity, to be part of the celebrations, which will include candle lighting, sports, lecture sessions among other events to reflect the many ways in which the late leader touched national life.
