Disability rights advocate Hafid Maalim Ibrahim is among 242 Kenyans proposed for national recognition during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, scheduled for October 20, 2026.

Ibrahim, who serves as chairperson of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Northern Kenya, is being recognised for his contribution to advancing the rights, inclusion, and representation of persons with disabilities.

According to the National Heroes Council, Ibrahim played a significant role in advocacy efforts that contributed to the enactment of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, which provides a framework for promoting equal access to education, employment and political participation for persons with disabilities in both the public and private sectors.

His proposed recognition highlights his contribution to disability rights advocacy and efforts to promote equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, particularly in Northern Kenya, where access to essential services and inclusive representation remain important development priorities.

He also holds the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW), a presidential honour conferred during the 2025 Jamhuri Day celebrations in recognition of his contribution to society.

Beyond his advocacy work, Ibrahim is seeking to translate his experience in community leadership into elective politics.

He is a candidate for the Mandera senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election and has expressed his intention to contest on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

His senatorial bid is expected to focus on inclusive leadership, the rights of persons with disabilities, and ensuring that marginalised communities have a stronger voice in governance and public decision-making.

As Kenya prepares to celebrate Mashujaa Day, Ibrahim’s proposed recognition highlights the role of disability rights advocates in advancing equality, dignity and inclusion in national development.
