Gor Mahia skipper Alpha Onyango who scored the winner in weekend's Mashemeji Derby has attributed the success to proper planning and coordinated teamwork.

Onyango who was voted man of the match said the technical bench gave them strict instructions to fully concentrate on the match for the entire 90 minutes and bring home success while also thanking his teammates for a job well done.

“We prepared well for the big day and agreed to stay focused throughout the 90 minutes. The win resulted from proper preparation and the combined effort of all players,” said Onyango.

After a long deadlock in the match, Onyango converted a cross by Brighton Onyona in the 82nd minute to seal the deal.

He says he could not have done it alone without the input of the rest of the team.

Onyango admitted there is pressure ahead of the five remaining matches, as Gor only needs 10 points out of a possible 15 to reclaim the title.

“There is no small team in the top-tier league. We will approach every match with caution.

“Teams perceived to be smaller have given us a run for our money and so we shall not underrate any team.’’

Following their derby success, Onyango was rewarded with a Ksh.25,000 cheque by club patron Eliud Owalo in a luncheon held and Carnival Restaurant as club co-sponsors Plascon Ltd also gave the rest of the team Ksh.75, 000 as an appreciation following the win.

Gor Mahia will next face Kakamega Homeboyz in Kakamega County over the weekend before facing Kenya Police FC, Murang'a Seal, Mara Sugar and Nairobi United respectively.

Meanwhile, Gor and Harambee Stars defender Sylvester Owino hinted that they are aiming for nothing short of a place in the continental arena.

Owino, who was side-lined with injury during the derby, says it is time Gor returned to Champions League action following a year in the cold when they failed to win any trophy last season.

‘’Nothing will stop us from featuring in the CAF Champions League. Our main target was to get past the Derby hurdle and since it is now behind us, we are dedicated to defying all odds and making it back to the Champions League,” said Owino.

During the luncheon where the Patron handed then Ksh. 1 million in cash as fulfilment of his win promise against the Leopards, Owalo promised to assist the boys with every available tool to ensure they bring home their 22nd title.

‘’The same way you prepared for the derby and won, I will assist you prepare for the remaining matches and ensure you bring home the trophy.’’

Head Coach Charles Akonnor and his assistant Kobbi Mensah also expressed confidence in finishing the season as champions.
