The death toll from the tragic Kisumu–Kakamega Highway bus accident has risen to 26 after one of the five passengers in critical condition succumbed to injuries Saturday morning.

Twenty-eight others who were injured in the crash remain in stable condition and are awaiting surgeries, which are expected to be concluded this afternoon.

Post-mortem examinations of the bodies are expected to be completed no later than Monday.

The government has pledged to cater for all medical costs as well as burial expenses for the victims.

Families of the deceased, who were part of a 54-member group travelling from a burial ceremony in Kisumu West, are reeling in shock and grief, appealing for further support as they come to terms with the sudden loss of their loved ones.

The accident occurred when the school bus, which was ferrying mourners from Nyahera to Nyakach in Kisumu County, was attempting to navigate a corner at the Coptic blackspot and rolled over.

At the time of the accident, the fatalities included 10 men, 10 women and an eight-month-old baby.

Twenty other survivors were also rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment, with five being in critical condition.
