One person has died following an incident at Issako area in
Gatunduri along the Embu-Meru Highway, where residents reportedly confronted a
suspected M-Pesa robbery suspect who was attempting to flee from the scene.
The suspect is said to have been part of a group that had
allegedly robbed an M-Pesa shop before escaping in a Probox vehicle.
According to Ngandori South Location Senior Chief Lincoln
Muthee, the suspect managed to evade his pursuers and reached Gakwegori, where
he made a U-turn and headed towards Runyenjes.
Muthee said a group of boda boda riders who were pursuing the
vehicle later caught up with the suspect at Issako and attempted to barricade
the road.
In the ensuing confrontation, the Probox reportedly hit a
woman who was riding on a motorcycle, killing her on the spot. The boda boda
rider sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
The incident angered residents, who descended on the vehicle,
overturned it and set it ablaze.
The suspect reportedly escaped on foot before security
officers arrived at the scene.
Chief Muthee has appealed to residents to refrain from taking
the law into their own hands, urging them to hand over suspected criminals to
the police for lawful action.
Police have launched investigations into the incident, while
efforts to establish the identity and whereabouts of the suspect are ongoing.
