DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has claimed his party’s performance in the Emurua Dikirr by-election would have amounted to a victory were it not for bribery and intimidation, saying the outcome shows President William Ruto has to “bribe” even in his backyard.

In a statement issued on Monday, Gachagua thanked voters in Dikirr for what he termed their faith and support, while alleging malpractice.

“This was our victory were it not for bribery and intimidation,” he said, adding: “We are encouraged that Ruto has to bribe people of his backyard to vote for us.”

Gachagua also announced changes and new appointments within the party leadership, saying DCP is seeking to expand its national footprint.

He said the party’s National Executive Council appointed Leonard Cheruiyot to join the NEC as Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock.

Gachagua said the NEC also appointed Abdi Noor Mohammed as chairperson for Northern representation, while Wilson Kanyagu Ndungu of Daystar University will represent the youth caucus.

He further announced John Methu of Nyandarua as Secretary General designate set to take over from Hezron Obaga, adding that Methu has been tasked with leading the party’s campaign for the Ol Kalou by-election.

Gachagua claimed the party has received growing interest from North Rift and South Rift aspirants, and said thousands have registered to seek elective seats on the DCP ticket.

He said the party had received 34 expressions of interest for governor positions, 764 for Member of National Assembly seats and 11,564 aspirants for MCA positions.

Gachagua also claimed the party has registered 4,576,345 members.

He raised concerns about the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, alleging the system was refusing to remove members from UDA.
