Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have identified more graves at Kwa Binzaro village, Kilifi County.

The team, led by Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto, is on a fact-finding mission, reviewing initial findings and piecing together evidence to determine what transpired between March and July this year.

After days of silence and uncertainty over what unfolded in the quiet village of Kwa Binzaro between March and July, detectives from the homicide unit, led by Martin Nyuguto, have pitched camp in the area, combing through the dense thicket and collecting critical preliminary evidence that might unravel a chilling narrative similar to the events of the Shakahola massacre in 2023.

Clad in full forensic gear, DCI homicide head Martin Nyuguto and his team, who are on a fact-finding mission, have been combing every corner and homestead, marking suspected grave sites where detectives believe followers of a cult may have died and were secretly buried.

These suspected shallow graves in different zones are now part of an active crime scene and will be under tight security around the clock as investigators review the initial findings and prepare to bring in a forensic team expected to arrive next week.

The identification of additional grave sites has sent a wave of anxiety throughout the area, with uncertainty growing over how many people were truly residing in the village and how many might still be unaccounted for.

The homicide unit plans to remain in the area next week as investigations deepen.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed accusations that the country’s intelligence machinery failed.

"There was no lapse in intelligence. We are moving swiftly to ensure there are no more deaths or unreported bodies," said Murkomen.

So far, one male body and two human skulls have been recovered from the forest and homesteads in the area.
