The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has ruled out claims of foul play in the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

In a statement on Monday, DCI noted that they conducted a rigorous probe to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, which involved interrogating his closest allies and individuals who were  with him before the fateful day.

Jirongo, 64, died in a fatal road accident in the early hours of December 13, 2025.

Reports indicate that he was driving to his rural home in Lugari when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

An investigative team recorded statements from several key witnesses, among them his wife Ann Lanoi Pertet, the bus driver Tiras Kamau Githinji and the bus conductor Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi and staff members from Eagol petrol station, where his car was seen making a U-turn.

Additionally, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli — who were last seen with Jirongo at Karen Oasis restaurant on December 12, 2025 — voluntarily provided their accounts of the events.

"Further, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, and their statements were also recorded," DCI wrote.

A multi-agency team also visited and processed the scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, documented physical evidence, and recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for review and analysis.

The bus manifest and amateur videos from the scene were also obtained and subjected to forensic analysis.

Based on the evidence gathered, the DCI established that the incident was a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play.

The investigative police branch said that the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for appropriate directions upon conclusion of the remaining investigative processes.

Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30 at his family homestead in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, next to his parents.

Meanwhile, members of the public and political leaders have been urged to exercise restraint and refrain from making speculative statements that could prejudice the investigative process or cause undue public anxiety.
