Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Geoffrey Ruku has assured the people of Marsabit and other arid and semi-arid areas that the government is fully committed to ensuring food security and protecting livelihoods.
Speaking during the Tokumma Food and Cultural Festival 2025
in Marsabit, Ruku said the Kenya Kwanza administration has put in place proper
mechanisms to ensure no Kenyan suffers from hunger, even in drought-affected
regions.
He noted that the government has adequate food reserves for
vulnerable populations and urged local administrators to promptly report areas
requiring emergency intervention.
The CS added that the government has clear plans to
safeguard livestock in regions affected by drought, emphasising that protecting
livelihoods remains a key priority.
He reaffirmed that President William Ruto continues to push
forward development in a tactical and deliberate manner, steadily implementing
the government’s manifesto.
Ruku called on residents to continue supporting the
government, saying sustained cooperation would accelerate development across
the region.
He cited ongoing and planned development projects, noting
that the government remains focused on improving service delivery and economic
opportunities, particularly in marginalised areas.
He also assured residents of the government’s commitment to
ensuring seamless and accessible public services through Huduma Centres, saying
the centres play a critical role in bringing government services closer to the
people.
Ruku further weighed in on the evolving dynamics of Mt Kenya
leadership, urging leaders from Mt Kenya West to support Mt Kenya East in the
spirit of fairness, unity and inclusivity.
He said leadership of the mountain is not the preserve of
one community, noting that Mt Kenya comprises diverse communities that all deserve
equal opportunity to lead.
Ruku observed that Mt Kenya East has historically supported
leaders from Mt Kenya West and argued that the time has come for reciprocity as
the region prepares for future political transitions.
He called on Mt Kenya East leaders and residents to rally
behind Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki, describing him as the most senior
leader from the region currently serving in government.
According to Ruku, Prof Kindiki has a strong national
profile and stands a realistic chance of succeeding President William Ruto in
2032 if the region remains united and focused.
“We have Prof Kithure Kindiki whom we should support, and in
2032 he will be the President of Kenya,” Ruku said.
The CS also took a swipe at Democracy for the Citizens Party
(DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of focusing on blocking leaders
perceived to be close to President Ruto instead of supporting the government’s
development agenda.
The Tokumma Food and Cultural Festival 2025, held under the theme “Unity in Diversity, Celebrating Cultures through Food and Peace”, brought together the 14 communities living in Marsabit, showcasing traditional food, attire, music and dance, while promoting dialogue, peaceful coexistence and the rejection of harmful practices such as female genital mutilation, early marriage and gender-based violence.
