Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba has warned school principals and Boards of Management against imposing illegal levies on parents, saying any unauthorised charges will not be tolerated.

Speaking at Father. Makewa Senior School, the CS said any additional fees charged by schools must first receive written approval from the Ministry of Education before implementation.

Migos Ogamba also called on school heads to embrace new administrative approaches to tackle the increasing cases of student unrest and the abuse of hard substances in learning institutions.

"Extra levies and additional fees constitute an unlawful barrier to education and access. Basic education in Kenya is free and compulsory. Boarding fees may be levied only in line with the circulars issued by the Ministry of Education unless otherwise authorised by that same Ministry. That authorisation must be in writing," he stated.

Therefore, let us all work together to promote access and equity in our education system by abiding by the requirements of the law and our policies."
