Parents have been urged to take greater responsibility for their children's behaviour and avoid leaving the entire burden of discipline to teachers.

Speaking in Nyamira County, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba described the Utumishi Girls incident as unfortunate and regrettable, urging parents to work closely with schools to address cases of student unrest.

The CS, who was attending a prize-giving ceremony at Sironga Girls High School in West Mugirango Constituency, emphasised the need to strengthen guidance and counselling programmes for learners to help promote discipline and positive behaviour.

“Shule yenye watoto wanachoma shule mpaka watoto wengine wanapoteza maisha ni kitu ngumu na chungu. Naomba watu wote, mzazi, watu wa kanisa na mtu yeyote ongea na watoto ili wawe na nidhamu na waweze kumaliza masomo yao vizuri,” he said.

Meanwhile, Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke, speaking at a separate event in Bobasi, Kisii County, also weighed in on the matter, calling for closer collaboration between parents, teachers and other stakeholders in nurturing responsible learners.

“The primary responsibility of a parent is discipline because this is your child, your blood; that first ethos of right and wrong, don’t burn the school, don’t attack someone else... it starts from parents and cannot start from teachers. Once the home foundation is done, the teachers find an easier work to reinforce that and start teaching,” Broadcasting and Telecommunications PS Stephen Isaboke said.
