Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed that all those
captured-on CCTV during the All Saints’ Cathedral invasion on June 12 will be
arrested as the analysis of the CCTV footage is underway.
Speaking during a
church service at AIC Plainsview in Nairobi, Murkomen warned that the incident
reflects a broader security challenge involving organised criminal gangs
operating in urban areas.
“The DCI is analysing the footage. Some have already been arrested and others
are being pursued," he said.
Interior CS
warned that the government will not tolerate political or criminal gangs,
saying many were initially formed by politicians who later lost control of
them.
“We have gangs created by political actors who later lose control of them….we
have other gangs formed by individuals due to economy," Murkomen added.
He added that the government is stepping up operations to dismantle rogue groups,
including the rollout of the Nairobi metropolitan police unit.
“Our next phase is to eliminate the threat of gangs through the Nairobi
metropolitan police and other measures," he added.
According to Murkomen, the government has already recorded success in
suppressing gang activity in several towns, including Nakuru and Kitale, which
had previously experienced rising insecurity linked to organised criminal
groups.
Meanwhile, the National Police Service (NPS) has commenced a
probe on the attack, saying that expeditious reviews of the CCTV footages are
ongoing as two suspects remain in police custody.
Meanwhile, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK)
has called the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the suspects are
arrested and prosecuted.
