Cricket Kenya boss Gohil purring as Kenya eyes ILT20 Continental Cup glory in Kigali

The ILT20 Continental Cup gets underway on Tuesday at the Gahanga Cricket Oval Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, with the Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) hosting the men's national teams of Kenya, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda in what will be the overall third (3rd) edition of the event.

The tournament format will be a single round-robin league, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals on September 12 and the final on September 13.

Ugandan men are the defending champions from the previous edition held in 2024, having also won the inaugural edition held in 2023.

After debuting in Kenya in 2023 and taking a brief hiatus, the tournament is back. Cricket Kenya Chairman Bhavesh Gohil expressed pride in its return and optimism about what lies ahead.

“It is a tournament that was initiated in Kenya in 2023 before taking a break, and we should be proud of that.

“It has been reignited, and we all look forward to an outstanding tournament after having some competitions within.” Said Bhavesh.

Kenya's captain Dhiren Gondaria and selectors' chairman Rakesh Hirani challenged the chosen players to fight for the country and encouraged those who missed selection to keep working hard.

“Going to this ILT20 Continental Cup, I think the guys are very confident, and with the help of the board, we will try to give our 120% and make Kenya proud," said Dhiren.

The tournament will provide an opportunity to the likes of Uganda and Nigeria ahead of the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Lagos in October 2026.
