Delivering the sentence on Tuesday, trial judge Martin Muya described the offence as "barbaric", saying the circumstances of the crime warranted the maximum custodial sentence.
"I find that the acts committed were barbaric. Bearing in mind that the accused has been in custody, I sentence him to life imprisonment," the judge ruled.
The court noted that although Mugure had already spent time in remand custody during the trial, the gravity of the offence outweighed any mitigating factors presented in his favour.
Mugure was charged with the murder of his wife and two children in October 2019.
He told the court he does not agree with the verdict, but the judge informed him of his right to appeal.
The life sentence brings to an end the criminal proceedings against him.
