A man recently convicted in connection with a robbery with violence linked to the killing of former Kabete MP George Muchai has told the court that his family fell apart following his arrest, with his wife leaving and their child being taken in by his mother.

In an affidavit filed before the court, Raphael Kimani Gachie paints a picture of a life that changed dramatically after his incarceration.

He states that prior to his arrest, he was a hardworking businessman involved in running a family establishment, including the New Muthangari Bar, Restaurant and Butchery.

Gachie says he was married and had one child. However, following his arrest and detention, he was unable to continue providing for his family a situation he says led to emotional strain and eventual separation.

He told the court that his wife left the marriage during his incarceration, while their child was taken in and is now under the care of his mother, Regina Mwati Gachie.

The convict further explains that he has spent several years in custody, during which he says he has undergone significant personal reform.

He highlights his involvement in religious activities, including being baptized under the Kenya Prisons Catholic Chaplaincy and serving in a leadership role within the prison’s Christian community.

He also notes that he has been actively engaged in teaching fellow inmates and prison officers subjects such as Information Technology and French, and has received a recommendation from prison authorities.

Through his lawyer, Danstan Omari, Gachie expresses remorse for his actions and appeals to the court for leniency during sentencing.

He urges the court to consider the time he has already spent in custody, as well as the personal and family hardships he has endured since his arrest.

Five others who were also convicted have asked the court to show them mercy, stating that they are first-time offenders.
