Construction of medical training college underway in Kirinyaga

The Ksh. 565 million facility, currently under construction near Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, is expected to open up new opportunities for students seeking careers in the health sector while strengthening the region’s healthcare workforce.

For years, students from Kirinyaga interested in medical training have had to travel to other counties to pursue courses in nursing, clinical medicine, and other health-related fields. The new institution is expected to change that by bringing training opportunities closer to home.

Beyond education, the project is also anticipated to stimulate economic activity in nearby towns such as Kerugoya and Kutus. The presence of students, lecturers, and support staff is likely to increase demand for housing, transport, food services, and other small businesses.

The college is being developed through a collaboration between the National Government, the Kirinyaga Central National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), and the County Government of Kirinyaga, which provided the land for the project.

According to county officials, the location of the institution next to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital will allow students to gain practical experience in a clinical environment while training.

Once completed, additional facilities such as student hostels are expected to be developed to support the growing number of learners.

Construction is currently ongoing, with engineers and technical teams working toward completing the project within the planned timeline of about 52 weeks. Interns and attachment students are also gaining hands-on exposure at the construction site as the facility takes shape.

When complete, the college is expected to not only expand access to medical education but also contribute to building a stronger healthcare system in Kirinyaga County and the wider Mt. Kenya region.
